5K Eco-Run/Walk at Harford Community CollegeHarford Community College will hold its 8th annual 5K Eco-Run/Walk on Sunday, October 31. Walkers begin at 8 a.m.; runners begin at 8:30 a.m. On-site registration will be held from 7–7:45 a.m. in front of the Susquehanna Center.

Entry fees to participate in the run or walk are $15 for the general public; $10 for HCC students and employees (with valid HCC photo I.D.); and free for children under 13 (with registered adult). Harford County National Test Scores Remain Steady; Participation Up

Harford County Public SchoolsHarford County students scored above the state and national averages on the Critical Reading and Mathematics sections of the SAT Reasoning Test, according to data released by the College Board.

Compared to 2009, Harford County test-takers’ overall performance held steady in Critical Reading (507), increased two points in Mathematics, and dropped by five points in Writing. Harford County mean scale scores exceed the state in Critical Reading (507 versus 501) and in Mathematics (523 versus 506) while remaining below the state in Writing (483 versus 495). The mean SAT Composite earned by Harford County students in 2010 was 1513 compared to the state’s average of 1502. Read more...

ANNAPOLIS, MD - Comptroller Peter Franchot today reminded taxpayers who received a six-month extension on their 2009 personal income tax returns to file by the October 15 deadline. About 90,000 extension returns are expected to be filed this year by next Friday.

Harford Ballet Company Member Receives Maryland Distinguished Scholar Award

Rachel CockerhamBel Air, MD – Harford Ballet Company member Rachel Cockerham was recently awarded the Maryland Distinguished Scholar Award for Dance.

Ms. Cockerham was one of 300 students across the state of Maryland chosen to receive the annual college scholarship. She performed her ‘Blue Bird’ variation from Harford Ballet Company’s Sleeping Beauty in front of a panel of professional judges for her audition. This is Rachel’s first season as an apprentice in the professional division of Harford Ballet and she has performed as a pre-professional member in works such as Sleeping Beauty, Wizard of Oz, Paquita and Rhapsody in Blue. The track, known as “the Graw”, was open from 1912 until 1952 and was considered to be one of the best turf racing strips in America. For many years, The Graw was an important training ground for owners who had hopes of winning the Kentucky Derby. The most memorable day in its history was September 29, 1920, when the greatest of thoroughbreds, Samuel D. Riddle's Man O' War, ran in the Potomac Handicap and won by a length and one-half over a strong field that included Kentucky Derby winner Paul Jones. The location of the 1920's themed event is at the original Graw Club House, located on Old Bay Lane (now known as the Maryland National Guard).

This was the happening place during the 1920's with the Graw Horse Racetrack attracting many famous and notorious characters such as Al Capone and movie stars like Jane Russell.
