Upper Chesapeake Chorus Takes Top Honors in Regional Competition

The talented divas of Harford County’s Upper Chesapeake Chorus took two top awards in the Sweet Adelines Mid-Atlantic Region chorus competition against 22 other choruses from Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Conference to Focus on Treatment of Traumatized Youth

School, Community, and Clinical Perspectives to be Explored

(Bel Air, MD) - - The Harford County Department of Community Services’ Local Management Board will co-host a conference on Treating Traumatized Youth: School and Clinical Perspectives on Wednesday, June 1, 2011, from 8:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at the HEAT Center, 1201 Technology Drive in Aberdeen.

The conference will present school, community, and clinical perspectives on treating traumatized youth. Experts will offer advice on how to make an accurate diagnosis and provide tools to use when working with youth who have experienced trauma (inability to attach, cutting, therapeutic resistance). Lt. Governor Brown Hosts MBE Conference at HCC

Harford Community College was the venue for the MBE University Conference held by Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown on May 23 to support Maryland’s minority and women-owned businesses and to highlight the State’s progress with minority business enterprises.  The conference was one of seven in a series of conferences that have traveled around the State offering training, opportunities and information on the tools necessary for minority and women-owned businesses to expand, create jobs, and thrive. On Thursday, May 19, Harford Community College held its Fifty-Third Annual Commencement. In a traditional cap and gown ceremony, graduates of the Class of 2011 received the Associate’s degree and/or certificate at the event. (Bel Air, MD) - - On Friday, May 20, some 126 cyclists participated in the ninth annual Bike to Work Day rally in Bel Air at the Harford County Government Administration Building. Bike to Work Day is a nationally observed day to encourage and recognize bicycling as a healthy, clean commuting option.

Traditional Ceremony to Honor Marylanders killed in Iraq/Afghanistan

Members of the military with substantial ties to Maryland, killed since May 2010 while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, will be honored at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens’ annual Memorial Day Ceremony. The traditional ceremony, which salutes the men and women of the armed forces who have paid the highest price in defense of the United States of America, will take place Monday, May 30, 2011 at 10:00 a.m., in the Circle of the Immortals, Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens. NCAA Youth LAX Tournament Weekend

Forty students from Frederick Douglass Academy in Brooklyn, NY, are arriving on May 28 at 10am at Broom's Bloom on Route 543 to tour a working dairy farm.

After that, they head to Baltimore City. They return here on SUNDAY, MAY 29 to participate in the NCAA Youth LAX Day Tournament at Cedar Lane Park in Bel Air and Carsins Run Field in Aberdeen. Read more...

“Technology Needs Teens” at Harford Community College on May 25

On May 25, Harford Community College will host 180 students from nine Harford County middle schools for the 4th Annual “TNT--Technology Needs Teens,” a day filled with science and technology fun. TNT is a one-day program for a select group of eighth grade students to learn from hands-on presentations by science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professionals.

GIS Analyst Erin Wiley Chosen as Employee of the Month for May

(Bel Air, MD) - - Erin Wiley, GIS Analyst for the Department of Planning & Zoning, has been chosen as the Harford County Employee of the Month for May. Wiley, a nine year employee of Harford County Government, was nominated for the award by Bel Air attorney John Gessner.

Harford County Uses Solar Power at the Equestrian Barn

(Bel Air, MD) - - The Green Stars for this quarter are Paul Magness of the Department of Parks and Recreation and Bill McKean of DPW, Capital Projects. Bill and Paul were nominated for their integration of alternative energy into the roof replacement design at the Equestrian Barn. In total, five solar powered roof ventilation fans were installed as part of the Equestrian Barn Roof Replacement. This measure will save energy while reducing heat build-up and removing moisture from the space. The use of alternative energy to power the ventilation fans allows Harford County Government to take the next step towards sustainability. Read more...

Harford Office of Drug Control Policy Hailed as Best in the State

(Bel Air, MD) - - Harford County Executive David R. Craig recently congratulated the staff of the Office of Drug Control Policy for their statewide recognition in substance abuse prevention programs.

The State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration (ADAA) published their annual report for fiscal year 2010 (July 1, 2009-June 30, 3010), and according to their Prevention Program Activity Report, the Harford County Office of Drug Control Policy (ODCP), a division within the Department of Community Services, served the greatest number of participants (a total of 23,517) of the 24 jurisdictions in Maryland. Baltimore City was second with 23,245, and Baltimore County was third with 23,134. Read more...

Family & Children’s Services Named Harford County’s Youth Services Bureau

Family & Children’s Services of Central Maryland was named Harford County’s Youth Services Bureau (YSB) by the Department of Juvenile Services, this month. Youth Services Bureau’s are community-based organizations that provide prevention and early intervention services for youth and their families. YSB’s focus on the prevention of delinquency, youth suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, and strive to enhance protective factors, while decreasing risk factors for youth and their families in the county they reside in. Currently there are 19 other YSB’s throughout Maryland. As a YSB, Family & Children’s Services hopes to bring additional funding for youth to Harford County. Read more...

Jason’s Music Center Piano Liquidation to be Held May 15

Jason’s Music Center, one of the oldest piano distributors in the country, will hold their 8th Annual Piano Liquidation on Sunday, May 15 at the Forest Hill Air Park. The highly-anticipated liquidation provides shoppers a rare opportunity to purchase top-quality pianos while supporting Harford County Public Schools (HCPS). Jason’s Music Center and Harford County Public Schools have had a unique partnership since 2002.
