Hall’s Cross Roads Team Nets 3rd Place at LEGO Championship

The WizBots, a FIRST LEGO League (FLL) team from Hall’s Cross Roads Elementary School competed at the 2010-2011 FIRST LEGO League State Championship at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

FIRST LEGO League is a worldwide organization that introduces students, ages nine to 16, to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface. Patterson Mill High Gets the Gold at the Heritage Choral Festival

The Patterson Mill High School (PMHS) Concert Choir participated in the Heritage Choral Festival on April 8, in Williamsburg, VA, and received a gold rating and the highest choir score for that festival. They were presented with a trophy for Most Outstanding Choir and an invitation to next year’s Heritage Gold Festival at Carnegie Hall. Prospect Mill Family Raises More Than $1,000 for the Citizens of Japan

The Prospect Mill Elementary School (PMES) community recently participated in the American Red Cross' fundraising efforts to support the citizens of Japan who were affected by the recent earthquake and Pacific Tsunami. Students, parents and staff brought in their change to help the school's "Coins for the Quake" fundraiser. The results have been impressive as the school has collected more than $2,000 in support of the survivors and their families. Read more...

Mabel E. Hart, Distinguished 33-Year Educator, Joins HCPS Hall of Fame

Mabel E. Hart is a product of the Harford County Public School system, where she received the foundation of her education before moving on to higher learning institutions. In 1939, she completed her teacher training at State Teachers College, in Bowie, Maryland. She credits her first grade teacher for influencing her to become a teacher. She continued her education by earning her bachelor’s degree from Morgan State University in 1965. In addition, Ms. Hart attended University of Delaware for a special program in which she received a Reading Specialist certificate upon completion. Read more...

Harford County Public Library Announces Smoke-Free Policy for All Buildings and Grounds

(Belcamp, Maryland) In the interest of the health and safety of customers and employees, Harford County Public Library has adopted a smoke-free policy for all buildings and grounds, effective May 1. The use of any type of tobacco product is prohibited, including the carrying or smoking of any kind of lighted pipe, cigar, cigarettes or other lighted smoking equipment. Harford County to Participate in Nationwide Prescription Drug Take Back

Turn in old/unused medicines for proper disposal to help eliminate prescription drug abuse

(Bel Air, MD) - - On Saturday, April 30 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Harford County will once again participate in the Nationwide Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Harford County will have two drop-off locations: the Parking Lot of the County Office Building, 220 S. Main Street in Bel Air (corner of Business Rt. 1 and Main Street); and the Havre de Grace Police Station, 715 Pennington Avenue in Havre de Grace. Lower Susquehanna Heritage Greenway Holds 11th Annual River Sweep

Darlington, MD -- River Sweep, Lower Susquehanna Heritage Greenway’s 11th annual volunteer shoreline and roadside clean-up in honor of Earth Day, will take place in Conowingo, Havre de Grace, Perryville and Port Deposit on Saturday, April 23. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with the clean-up 9 a.m. to noon, rain or shine.

Volunteers will meet at 8:30 a.m. in one of five locations and then fan out to spend the morning removing trash and other debris from the Chesapeake Bay, Susquehanna River and tributaries that feed into the Susquehanna River. Read more...

Harford Community College Saves 854,000 Gallons of Water through New Rain Collection System

Bel Air, MD -- As the 2011 celebration of Earth Day approaches on April 22, Harford Community College announces that it has captured and recycled 854,000 gallons of rainwater since 2006 as a result of three new rain collection systems that have been installed on campus.

Over the past 30 years, the overall amount of water usage on Harford Community College’s campus has remained steady despite the campus expanding its physical presence during that time by 170,000 gross square feet. Read more...

1st Expo featured resources for families with children ages birth to five years

Experienced motorcyclists can continue to enjoy the road with confidence after taking the new Advanced Rider Course at Harford Community College to brush up on safety techniques using their own cycles.  This course, approved by the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA), offers the same basic components of the Military Sportbike Rider Course that led to an over 60% decline in sportbike-related fatalities from 2008 to 2009 in the Army, Navy and Marine Corps. Read more...

Taxpayers Have Three Extra Days to File Taxes This Year

Tax Filing Deadline is April 18

Annapolis, MD – Comptroller Peter Franchot reminds Marylanders that this year’s tax filing deadline has been extended to Monday, April 18, allowing taxpayers three additional days to prepare and file their 2010 tax returns. As an added bonus, taxpayers who owe money can receive an extra two weeks to pay their liability if they file their tax return electronically by the April 18 deadline and choose to have their payment direct debited. Author of Award-Winning Novel Jarrettsville to Speak at Annual Night Out @ The Library Event

(Belcamp, Maryland) Preparations are underway for the 5th Annual Night Out at the Library, which will be held Friday, April 15 from 7pm to 9pm at the Jarrettsville Branch. This year author Cornelia Nixon will discuss her novel Jarrettsville, winner of the 2010 Michael Shaara Prize for Excellence in Civil War Fiction.

Based on a true story from the author’s family history, Jarrettsville is an account of Martha Jane Cairnes, who shot and killed her fiancĂ© Nicholas McComas in front of his Union calvary militia four years after the end of the Civil War. Read more...
