As a highly acclaimed writer of nonfiction for young readers, Freedman has received nearly every major children’s literary award including the Newbery Medal, several Newbery honors, the Sibert Medal, the May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture Award and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal for “a lasting and substantial contribution to children’s books.” Freedman also received the National Humanities Medal in 2007 in a ceremony at the White House.
