The Harford County Department of Parks & Recreation is offering 2 one-week Outdoor Adventure Camps for children between the ages of 11-14. Week 1 will be held Monday-Friday, July 11-July 15, 2011 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Week 2 will be held Monday-Friday, August 1-August 5, 2011. Each day brings campers a new experience at a different site. Campers will experience ropes challenges, canoe basics, kayaking, spelunking (caving) and rock wall climbing. Transportation will be provided from Kelly Fields in Bel Air to the various camp sites. Each year, fifth grade students and teachers participate in Harford Glen’s Golden Can Award competition while they are attending the residential program.The focus of the competition is minimizing impact on the environment through the appropriate handling of waste food and recyclable materials at mealtimes and rethinking how we utilize our natural resources. The 2011 Harford County Environmental Scholarship & Green Awards Event was held recently at the Harford Glen Environmental Education Center in Bel Air. What began as a local recycling project for Bel Air High School in 1972 grew in dramatic portions and has evolved into the second largest scholarship program in Harford County. Partnerships between Harford County Public Schools, the Susquehannock Environmental Center, many local businesses and individuals committed to the continuing education of the young scholars in the community have led the way for the success of this program. Bel Air High School emerges victorious in the Great Can Clash of 2011. The event was a recycling competition between Bel Air and C. Milton Wright high schools to see which school could collect the largest amount of aluminum cans in a one-month time period. The competition was a joint effort between the two schools, the Harford County Public Schools (HCPS) Facilities Department and the HCPS Resource Conservation Manager. Forest Hill Elementary School will hold a Rain Garden Dedication and Ceremony on Wednesday, June 8 at 2:00 p.m. in the rain gardens and gymnasium of the school. A small group of gifted and talented students, now fifth graders, have been working diligently on this project for one year to help reduce the storm water pollutants.The students researched facts about water quality, benefits of a rain garden and native plants that survive well in a rain garden environment. (Bel Air, MD) - - The Green Stars for this quarter are Paul Magness of the Department of Parks and Recreation and Bill McKean of DPW, Capital Projects. Bill and Paul were nominated for their integration of alternative energy into the roof replacement design at the Equestrian Barn. In total, five solar powered roof ventilation fans were installed as part of the Equestrian Barn Roof Replacement. This measure will save energy while reducing heat build-up and removing moisture from the space. The use of alternative energy to power the ventilation fans allows Harford County Government to take the next step towards sustainability. Read more...

Construction at Forest Hill Elementary School began the week of April 25th and is expected to take three to four weeks to complete. Darlington, MD – Despite heavy rain, more than 680 volunteers spent the morning of Saturday, April 23, participating in River Sweep, Lower Susquehanna Heritage Greenway’s 11th annual volunteer shoreline and roadside clean-up in honor of Earth Day.“The response to our call for volunteers was very strong despite the challenging weather conditions,” said Mary Ann Lisanti, executive director of Lower Susquehanna Heritage Greenway. “Nearly 450 people registered online to help us remove trash and debris from area waterways and roadsides and close to 700 people showed up.
