HCPS Will Implement AVID in Two Middle Schools This Year

Harford County Public Schools (HCPS) is excited to announce it will implement AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, at Aberdeen and Havre de Grace middle schools this coming school year. Outdoor Adventure Camp 2011

The Harford County Department of Parks & Recreation is offering 2 one-week Outdoor Adventure Camps for children between the ages of 11-14.

Week 1 will be held Monday-Friday, July 11-July 15, 2011 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Week 2 will be held Monday-Friday, August 1-August 5, 2011.

Each day brings campers a new experience at a different site. Campers will experience ropes challenges, canoe basics, kayaking, spelunking (caving) and rock wall climbing. Transportation will be provided from Kelly Fields in Bel Air to the various camp sites. Read more...

Havre de Grace Library Branch Unveils New Teen Room

(Belcamp, Maryland) Harford County Public Library Havre de Grace Branch unveiled a dedicated Teen Room recently. Designed and decorated by the teens, this room will be a new destination for many local youth.

Jennifer Brown (pictured on left), age 15 from Havre de Grace High School and Mira League (pictured on right), age 14 from Edgewood High School were both on hand for the activities. “It was cool to help design how the room would look and be able to help decorate it,” stated Jennifer Brown. “This included painting the walls with splatter paint!” Read more...

Harford Tech Graduate Wins World Online Art Contest

Congratulations to Katie Snyder, a 2011 Harford Technical High School graduate, for being named the overall winner in the 2011 Sargent Art Brighter World Online Art Contest for her mixed media painting of chicks! She won an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City July 15-17, 2011, where she will join other Youth Art Month state winners, parents and art teachers who will be arriving from 13 different states, for a fun-filled weekend. Bob Six Memorial Joust at Elkridge-Harford Hunt Club

The Amateur Jousting Club of Maryland will present a benefit match on July 9th on the grounds of the Elkridge-Harford Hunt Club to raise funds for the Historical Society of Harford County. The Bob Six Memorial Joust will take place beginning at 11:00 AM in the horse show/polo ring of the hunt club's facility at 3405 Pocock Road Monkton, Maryland 21111 at the corner of the Jarretsville Pike and next to Ladew Gardens. Northeastern Maryland Technology Council (NMTC) has partnered with the Community Foundation of Harford County to support STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education and workforce development in Harford County. NMTC has established a special project fund for STEM education through the Community Foundation. The fund makes grants to Harford County organizations with projects and programs that promote and support STEM education.

Thanks for the Parade!

On behalf of the Bel Air Independence Day Committee, Inc., I wish to thank the greater Bel Air and Harford County community for its response to this year's parade. The weather was a bit hot, it's true, but it cooled off by parade-time, and the breeze was wonderful and there was NO RAIN! I thought that the crowds were very large, enthusiastic and well-behaved. ARRA Grant Benefits HCPS Students with Disabilities

Humanim’s Start on Success (SOS) program is a partnership between the Maryland State Department of Education Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS), Humanim, Harford County Public Schools, and employer partner Upper Chesapeake Health (UCH). July Public Health Matters Segment Features Keith Mills

Bel Air, MD - The July Harford Cable Network (HCN) television schedule will include a “Public Health Matters” (PHM) segment on prescriptive medication addiction featuring a compelling and motivational interview with Baltimore broadcaster and sports personality, Keith Mills.

Mr. Mills, with PHM host, Harford County Health Officer Susan Kelly, traces the history of his introduction to prescriptive pain killers from the time of a disabling back injury, to his abuse, treatment, relapse, the public embarrassment of his arrest, and to subsequent recovery in light of what he admits is an ongoing and lifelong process. He speaks candidly about the humiliation he felt, the devastation of his family, the consequences to his career as a sportscaster, and the disease ramifications of his addiction, citing how “severely wicked and destructive” the pattern of addiction is and how it can impact anyone. APG Technology Showcase Draws Crowd of More Than 600

Harford Community College presented its annual showcase of Aberdeen Proving Ground recently at the Amoss Center in Bel Air. The event was a huge success with 627 registered participants from 23 states representing 284 organizations. Over 60 companies exhibited the capabilities and technologies at and coming to Aberdeen Proving Ground. In addition, there were 43 presenters at this year’s event. Read more...

Gov. Martin O’Malley to Appear in 2011 Bel Air Independence Day Parade

(Bel Air, Maryland) Gov. Martin O’Malley is set to appear in the Bel Air Independence Day Parade for a third time, the Bel Air Independence Day Committee Inc. announced Friday.

O’Malley previously appeared in the parade in 2007 and 2009. He was elected to a second term as the state’s governor in November.

“We’re honored to have Gov. O'Malley in our parade,” parade chairman Mike Blum said. “It's a great honor for the people of Bel Air and Harford County that their governor cares enough to be part of our patriotic event.” Read more...
